Watch and jewellery discounts: pre-owned priced against new, and the 70 percent off trap

A watch at 70 percent off a price it has never sold for, in an aisle where a real discount is 10 to 25. How to read a watch or jewellery sale, and the one comparison that settles it.

    Short answer

Watches and jewellery discount in small numbers. A real markdown on a current model from an authorised dealer is 10 to 25 percent, and that's a good day. Watch deals at 50 to 70 percent off are usually measured against a price nobody charged, a new price for a pre-owned piece, or a watch without the brand's warranty. Check the brand's own price first.

A watch at 70 percent off. R16,000, now R4,800, in a shop window with a lot of red in it. It's a known brand, it's a nice watch, and the number is doing exactly what it was put there to do, because you've stopped walking.

In this aisle the percentages run big and the real discounts run small, and the gap between the two is the whole story. This guide covers the four ways a watch or a ring gets a big number on it, the one way it gets a real one, and the comparison that sorts them in a minute.

The brand's own price, then the sticker

Take that R4,800 watch. Open the brand's South African site or an authorised dealer and find the same model. Say it's R5,200 there, at full price, no sale. The discount in the window isn't R11,200. It's R400, which is fine, and a long way from 70 percent. The R16,000 was never a price anyone paid for that watch. It was picked to make R4,800 look like a steal.

Now take a R9,000 ring "valued at R18,000". That valuation is an insurance figure: what it would cost to replace the ring at retail in a hurry. It's a useful document to have. It isn't a price the ring has ever sold for, and it isn't the comparison to make. The comparison is the same carat, the same metal and the same stone grade at two other jewellers.

The watch deals you'll see, and what each one means

The jeweller that's permanently 50 to 70 percent off

The chain where everything is on sale, every week, against a was-price that nothing has sold at since the shop opened. The advertising code lets a retailer advertise a single price reduction for a maximum of three months and asks for evidence behind it. Any sale that's been running since you were at school is the price with a sticker on it. Compare the same piece at a jeweller that doesn't do stickers, and you'll usually find the "sale" price is the price.

    Pre-owned priced against new

"New R45,000, ours R32,000." The honest comparison for a pre-owned watch is other pre-owned examples of the same model, in the same condition, with the same box and papers, not the new price. A pre-owned piece from a reputable dealer is often good value.

At the time of review one specialist offers an optional twelve-month warranty on pre-owned pieces, which is worth having because the brand's warranty may have run out. Just measure it against its own kind, and see our playbook on certificates and pre-owned disclosure for what to ask the seller.

The grey dealer against the authorised dealer

The same new watch, 20 percent cheaper from a dealer the brand doesn't list. The price is real and the gap is the warranty. An authorised dealer sells with the brand's warranty, claimed through the brand's local service centre, and a grey dealer doesn't. The Consumer Protection Act says the listing should tell you it's an import, and you still have six months on a defect from whoever sold it. Cheaper, yes. The same purchase, no.

The valuation certificate as a price

Jewellery's version of the recommended price. A certificate stating a diamond's grade is useful and worth asking for. A certificate stating a "value" is an insurance replacement figure. A ring sold at "half its valued price" is just a ring sold at its price. Compare carat, cut, colour and clarity across two jewellers and ignore the valuation figure when you're deciding what to pay.

    The real markdown

A current model, from an authorised dealer, at 10 to 25 percent off with the brand's warranty intact. It happens when a model is updated and the old reference clears, at the end of a season for fashion watches, and on Black Friday for the entry and mid-range brands. Seiko, Tissot, Citizen, Casio and Fossil all run long-lived lines that get refreshed.

The outgoing version at 20 percent off from a proper dealer is the one worth buying. For the step-by-step check on a single watch, see how to spot a real watch discount.

    Where REALRANK™ comes in

Looking up the brand's own price on one watch is quick. Doing it for rings, chains and a dozen watch references across jewellers and dealers isn't. REALRANK™ does the price check on live watch and jewellery deals from the shops we track, and reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.

Whether the seller is authorised, and what the warranty covers, are still questions to ask yourself.

What a strong score looks like

These are the watch and jewellery deals scoring 9.0 and above. Before you buy one, check whether it's new or pre-owned and who honours the warranty, because the listing title won't always say.

    Before you pay

Find the brand's own price or an authorised dealer's. Ask who honours the warranty and for how long. On pre-owned, ask for the box, the papers and the service history, and compare against other pre-owned examples. On a diamond, ask for the grading certificate and ignore the valuation figure.

Returns and warranties on watches and jewellery

Read the returns line, because this aisle returns on tight terms. At the time of review one authorised online watch dealer gives 7 days on unworn pieces with packaging and tags. It excludes final-sale and clearance items from returns, and passes warranty claims to the brand's service centre. One national chain won't refund resized, engraved or personalised jewellery, or earrings. Faulty pieces go back within six months under the Consumer Protection Act whatever the window said.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 70 percent off jewellery ever real?

Almost never on a current piece. The percentage is measured against a was-price or a valuation that nothing sold at. Compare the same carat, metal and stone grade at two other jewellers to find the real price.

    Is a pre-owned watch a good deal?

Often, from a reputable dealer with box, papers and a warranty of its own. Compare it against other pre-owned examples of the same model, not the new price.

What is a grey import watch?

A new watch sold outside the brand's authorised channel, usually cheaper and usually without the brand's warranty. The listing must disclose it under the Consumer Protection Act, and the seller still owes you six months on a defect.

What is a real watch discount?

A current model from an authorised dealer at 10 to 25 percent off with the brand's warranty intact, usually when the model is updated or on Black Friday for entry and mid-range brands.
